British Virgin Islands: A Week of Cruising & Skill Development

Build Your Sailing Skills in British Virgin Islands 2026

Sailing Instruction Level: Beginner Experience Women-Only Sailing Program

You know your way around a sailboat. You’ve handled a tiller, tacked through the wind, and felt that perfect moment when the sails fill. Now, you’re ready for the next step: to take your experience to the helm of a cruising monohull in blue water.

This trip is designed for sailors who want to bridge the gap between day-sailing and confidently cruising. We’ll spend a week living aboard a modern monohull in the British Virgin Islands, focusing entirely on the practical, hands-on experience needed to become a more capable sailor.

To maximize your time at the helm and ensure truly personalized instruction, we keep the program intentionally intimate. The program consists of two monohulls sailing in tandem, each with an expert instructional captain and only two students on board. This unique format guarantees extensive one-on-one guidance and means you will have your own private cabin for the week, giving you personal space to relax and reflect after a full day on the water.

This is an immersive week, not a formal, by-the-book course. We’ll operate as a working crew, with everyone taking an active role. The goal is to build your confidence through repetition and real-world scenarios.

Our focus will be on:

  • Monohull Handling & Helming: Getting a feel for the momentum and systems of a larger sailing vessel. We’ll spend plenty of time at the helm so you can build your confidence in various conditions.
  • Navigation & Passage Planning: We’ll move beyond following a line on a chartplotter. Together, we’ll plan our routes, read the weather, and make decisions as a crew while navigating through the islands.
  • Anchoring & Mooring: This is a core skill we’ll practice extensively. You’ll get hands-on experience selecting an anchorage, securely setting the hook, and picking up mooring balls until it becomes second nature.
  • Advanced Sail Trim: We’ll work on dialing in the sails for performance, balance, and comfort during our open-water passages between islands.

Beyond the specific maneuvers, this is a week to immerse yourself in the rhythm of boat life—from provisioning and onboard systems management to sharing galley duties. It’s the most authentic way to understand what it truly takes to charter a sailboat.

The BVI provides the ideal environment for this kind of skill-building, offering a perfect mix of protected coves for practice and open-water passages to practice essential sailing skills.

This is your opportunity to step up, take on more responsibility, and leave with the practical experience you need for your own future adventures. If you’re ready to build on your foundation and become a more competent and confident cruiser, we’d love to have you on board.

Frequently Asked Questions

What will I gain from this sailing program?

This program is designed to provide the skills, experience, and confidence needed to bridge the gap between basic keelboat sailing and confidently skippering a larger cruising monohull. Beyond a fantastic week of sailing in the BVI, you will leave with:

  • Confidence & Competence: This is the most significant takeaway. You will gain the confidence that only comes from hands-on experience, moving from theory to practical application. The goal is for you to feel capable of handling a 40+ft monohull in real-world conditions, preparing you for future charters or more ambitious sailing adventures.
  • Extensive Hands-On Time: With only two students per instructional captain, you are not a passenger. You will get significant time at the helm and be deeply involved in every maneuver.
  • A True Taste of 'Boat Life': You will experience the authentic day-to-day rhythm of cruising. This includes participating in provisioning, managing onboard systems (water, power, etc.), and sharing the responsibilities that come with life at sea.
  • Personalized, High-Level Instruction: With a small group, your captain can focus on your specific goals and learning style. You’ll have the opportunity to ask in-depth questions and receive targeted feedback to improve your skills.
  • Valuable Sea Time: You will log significant time as active crew on a cruising vessel, which is invaluable for building your sailing resume and preparing you for the next step in your journey.

Is a certification included in this trip?

Yes! You can opt to do your Competent Crew Member or Large Keelboat Skipper Practical Assessment completed during this sailing program at no additional charge. To be eligible, you must have successfully finished all the required NauticEd Online coursework and logged the necessary on-the-water time prior to the trip. (NauticEd Certification Rank System) Please be aware that this is a formal skills assessment. The certification is not automatically guaranteed; it is awarded only upon the successful demonstration of all competencies required by the assessment rubrics. By the end of the assessment, you’ll have a clear breakdown of your strengths, areas of competence, and skills to improve. You’ll walk away with a strong foundation to grow your sailing résumé and move closer to your goals.

Do I need a hotel before or after the trip?

While your amazing sailing adventure is based entirely on the boat, many women find it beneficial and relaxing to book a hotel for a night or two before or after the trip. This allows for a smoother arrival and departure experience, giving you extra time to settle in or explore the beautiful island of Tortola or St Thomas (USVI) at your leisure. While we recommend booking in advance a detailed list of suggested hotel options will be provided in your comprehensive Trip Guide & Itinerary document once your cabin booking is confirmed.

What should I pack for the trip, and what kind of luggage is best for a boat?

When packing for a sailing trip, soft-sided luggage like a duffel bag or backpack is absolutely essential. Hard suitcases are difficult to store on a boat! Think light, versatile, and quick-drying for your clothing. Here's a suggested packing list to get you started:

  • Clothing: 2-3 swimsuits, quick-dry shorts, t-shirts, and light dresses or cover-ups. Include a long-sleeved shirt and lightweight pants for sun protection and cooler evenings. A light sweater or windbreaker is also a good idea.
  • Footwear: Non-marking, slip-resistant boat shoes or athletic shoes for on deck, water shoes for exploring beaches, and flip-flops or sandals for ashore.
  • Sun Protection: High SPF reef-safe sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, polarized sunglasses, and a rashguard/swim shirt for extended water time.
  • Personal Items: Reusable water bottle, a small daypack for excursions, personal toiletries (consider eco-friendly options), basic first-aid kit (including motion sickness remedies, pain relievers, and any personal medications), insect repellent, a waterproof phone case or dry bag, and a portable charger. Don't forget your camera, books, or an e-reader for downtime!
For a more comprehensive preparation, a full packing list recommendation guide will be provided in your student portal after your cabin booking is confirmed.

Can I bring my own food, and can my allergies be accommodated?

Okay, here's the revised answer for the food question, making it more fluid and focusing on the food preferences form:

Can I bring my own food, and can my allergies be accommodated? Due to the nature of a sailing trip with limited galley space, bringing large quantities of your own food isn't generally necessary or practical. However, accommodating allergies and dietary needs is a top priority! Once your cabin is booked, you'll fill out a detailed personal food preferences form. This is crucial for our crew to provision effectively for the trip. You'll also have ample opportunity to work with the crew on provisions, allowing us to include as many items as possible that cater to the group's needs and preferences. Keep in mind that some very specific or specialty items can be hard to find in the islands. So, if you have particular products that are crucial for your diet or allergies, we highly recommend planning to bring those with you. This ensures your comfort and safety while on board.

What happens if there's a medical emergency?

Your safety is paramount. In the event of a medical emergency, our trip leaders are trained in basic first aid and the boat is equipped with a comprehensive first-aid kit. For more serious situations, we have robust communication systems (VHF radio, satellite phone if needed) to contact local emergency services (local Coast Guard, local hospitals) immediately. If onshore medical care is required, we will transport you to the nearest appropriate medical facility. In extremely rare and severe cases, medical evacuation to a larger facility in a nearby country might be necessary. This is precisely why it is mandatory to have comprehensive travel and health insurance that includes emergency medical evacuation coverage for this trip. Please ensure you provide all relevant medical history and emergency contact information before we depart.

Is there an emergency number my family can use to reach me?

Yes, absolutely. Before the trip begins, you will be provided with a dedicated emergency contact number for the trip leaders. Please share this number with your family and emphasize that it is strictly for genuine emergencies. For non-urgent communication, they can try to reach you directly on your cell phone, keeping in mind that coverage can be intermittent while at sea.

Will I have cell phone coverage?

You will generally have cell phone coverage while in BVI. The primary local provider is Digicel. However, please be aware that coverage can be spotty or non-existent when we are further offshore or sailing between islands. While international roaming is an option, it can be quite expensive, so many participants choose to purchase a local SIM card upon arrival for more cost-effective communication. Be prepared for periods of limited connectivity – many find this a welcome opportunity to disconnect and fully embrace the sailing experience!

What airport do I fly into?

You have two main options for arriving in Tortola for the start of our program. We recommend comparing the price and logistics for both before booking. Option 1: Fly Directly to Tortola (EIS) The most direct route is to fly into Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport (EIS). The airport is located on Beef Island, which is connected to the main island of Tortola by a short bridge. This is the most straightforward option, as you can simply take a taxi from the airport to the marina upon arrival.

  • Airport Code: EIS
  • Location: Tortola, British Virgin Islands
  • Pros: Simplest and most direct route with no ferry connections required.
Option 2: Fly to St. Thomas (STT) and Take a Ferry Alternatively, many people find more flight options or better pricing by flying into Cyril E. King Airport (STT) in St. Thomas, which is part of the U.S. Virgin Islands. From there, you would take a ferry over to Tortola. This option requires a few extra steps:
  1. Fly into St. Thomas (STT).
  2. Take a taxi from the airport to a ferry terminal (usually Charlotte Amalie or Red Hook).
  3. Take a public ferry to Tortola (arriving in either Road Town or West End).
  4. You will clear BVI Customs & Immigration upon arrival at the ferry terminal in Tortola.
  • Airport Code: STT
  • Location: St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands
  • Pros: Can sometimes offer more competitive airfares and more frequent flights from the U.S.
  • Cons: Requires extra logistical steps (taxi and ferry) and careful planning. You must check the ferry schedules in advance to ensure your flight's arrival time allows you to catch the last ferry of the day.
Our Recommendation: Check flight availability and pricing for both EIS and STT. If the costs are comparable, flying directly into EIS is significantly more convenient. If you find a great deal flying into STT, just be sure to research the current ferry schedules online and allow ample time for your transfers.

Do I need to get local currency, and what's recommended?

No, if you are traveling from the United States, you will not need to exchange money. The official currency of the British Virgin Islands (BVI) is the U.S. Dollar (USD). Here is a quick breakdown of how payments generally work:

  • Cash (USD): We highly recommend having a good amount of U.S. cash on hand. It is essential for paying for taxis, buying drinks or snacks at smaller local beach bars, and for tips. While cards are widely accepted, cash is necessary for smaller, everyday transactions.
  • Credit Cards: Major credit cards like Visa and MasterCard are accepted at most larger establishments, including grocery stores, marinas, and restaurants. American Express is less commonly accepted. It's always a good practice to notify your bank of your travel dates to prevent your card from being flagged for security reasons.
  • ATMs: You can find ATMs in larger towns like Road Town on Tortola. However, they can be sparse or non-existent in the more remote anchorages we will be visiting. It is best to plan ahead and withdraw the cash you'll need when you have easy access to a bank or ATM.
In summary: For American travelers, there's no need to exchange currency. For all travelers, the best approach is to bring a mix of U.S. cash for smaller expenses and at least one major credit card for larger purchases.
