Instructions for Completing the SLC Self-Assessment Rubrics Form

NauticEd Bareboat Charter Master/SLC Self Assessment

As part of earning your Sailing License and Credentials (SLC), you’ll complete a self-assessment of your sailing skills. This form includes standardized rubrics to help you evaluate your current ability as Master of the Vessel.

Please answer honestly and accurately. Your responses will be reviewed by a qualified NauticEd SLC Assessor and will determine the structure and length of your on-the-water assessment.

Why Honesty Is Important

This assessment follows American National Standards for sailing competence, recognized by the United States Coast Guard. The goal is to ensure safety, skill, and strong seamanship. Assessors measure your skills against these national standards—not personal opinion.

  • If your self-assessment is accurate and your skills are solid, your practical assessment may take as little as 6 hours.

  • If you’re rusty or unsure in certain areas—or your on-the-water performance shows that—you may move into a combined training and evaluation format that can take up to 2 days or more.

That’s not a failure. It’s part of the learning process.

Key Things to Remember

  • The SLC is an internationally recognized sailing license that requires verified competence.

  • The assessor’s role is to evaluate your skills and identify any weaknesses that could affect safety.

  • Overstating your abilities to “move faster” may result in additional training and reassessment.

  • It’s completely okay—and encouraged—to note areas where you need a refresher.

  • If extra training is needed, you’ll leave more confident, capable, and safer as a skipper.

How to Complete the Self-Assessment

  • Take your time and reflect honestly on each skill.

  • Ask yourself: Could I confidently and safely perform this task as Master of the Vessel without supervision?

  • If you’re unsure, say so. That helps us support you properly.

Our shared goal is simple: to ensure you’re a safe, competent, and confident skipper—fully prepared for the responsibility of holding an SLC.
